Halloween Costumes

Halloween costumes are a great way to express your inner self.  They provide a way to individuals to express this other side of themselves for one day each year- Halloween!  Whether you are soft and cuddly or all-out scary, there is a costume for everyone, including your favorite pet.

Children love Halloween and getting to pick out their favorite Halloween costume is a big part of this holiday.  Small children are usually dressed in soft and cuddly costumes such as kittens, baby tigers and lions, lady bugs or favorite television characters like Barney and Power Rangers.  Older children may opt to make their own costumes, such as a pirate, ghost, mummy or the headless horseman.

Adult Halloween costume wearers have many options.  Making your own costumes is always an option, dressing in matching outfits is also popular (crash test dummies are a fun idea) or perhaps you will choose themed outfits.  Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, Marie Antoinette and King Louis, or even Orry and Madeline (North and South movie) can all work well for couples.  Singles can also have fun planning or renting their costume too.  Witches, vampires, literary characters, and scary movie characters can all inspire Halloween costumes.

There are a few guidelines you should remember, whether you are dressing a child, a pet, or yourself:

1.  Choose a comfortable Halloween costume.  Make sure that you can wear light clothing beneath it, or even heavier clothing if you live in a cold climate.  Painted on masks are more comfortable for small children than are plastic or rubber masks.

2.  Pet costumes are cute, but they need to fit correctly.  If your pet is unhappy with any element of the costume, take it off immediately.  Don't have any part of your pet's costume drag behind or in front of them since it may cause injury.

3.  Adults should also  choose costumes that are comfortable, especially if they will be dancing or partying in a heated building.  Masks quickly become hot indoors, as do heavy costumes.  If your costume is itchy, be sure to wear a lightweight t-shirt and shorts underneath it.  You may also cover itchy seams with duct tape to make your Halloween costume more comfortable- just remember to remove the tape afterwards if you have a rental costume.
